Character: Laruna Troven
Abilities: Laruna is a water wizard, which means that she has the ability to control water in all its forms, though not all liquids. It really depends on the water content. She can’t control blood or other bodily fluids no matter their water content. She’s also a healer, but that’s a completely non magical ability that she’s learned. And, of course, she knows how to make water into wine.
Flaws/weaknesses: I think her biggest flaw is her too much of a devil may rot attitude towards life. She’ll throw herself into doing absolutely whatever whim comes to mind without thinking of what might happen in the morning or even a few hours later. She likes drinking and fighting and sex and partying the night away. While her whims generally don’t fall into prankster territory, she’ll say what she wants without, again, thinking of the consequences. Her parents spent more time keeping track of her younger brother, Alec, than her. And felt that as long as she got her work done, she could do what she wanted. Perhaps they indulged her too much in this aspect to make up for the attention they spent on her brother. When her mother died when she was thirteen the attitude increased as she felt the need to live life to the fullest and do everything she wanted to do before she died. Even if she didn’t know what she wanted to do.
One that doesn’t have to do with her family so much is in regards to her interactions with other people. She’s a bit of a snob when it comes to dealing with people who aren’t wizards. A bit well prejudiced, really. Wizards are on top. First Family wizards are on top of that and everyone else is... not them and well... poor babies. It’s not intentional. She doesn’t even realize she does it, but it is there and causes some problems when interacting with people, of course.
History/background: Laruna Troven is the elder twin, born right before the spring festival. Her brother, Alec, was born ten minutes later five minutes after midnight and on the leapday. This, of course, lead to some interesting problems growing up, at least when she was younger. Her brother only had a birthday once every five years and was considered special for being born right on the spring festival. She just missed it by five minutes. So, while she had the proper birthdays, he got the attention for being born on the spring festival. She also has an older brother, by five years, named Wolf. Her mother’s name is Sela and her father’s name is Raven.
As the Trovens are what passes for nobility in the wizarding city, being one of the original fifteen (now twelve) wizarding families. Wizards say that they don’t have nobles like humans do, but the Original Families are treated as such. Thus she grew up in high society and very wealthy.
It wasn’t all fun and games. She had to contend with her brother’s secret. Alec was the first elemental wizard -one who could control all four elements - born in a thousand years. The reason for this was because all the others were killed by an elemental wizard named Lorac. The surviving wizards decided that any new elemental wizard would be put to death. So, when it was discovered that Alec was born with that ability the family kept it hushed. It wasn’t his fault after all.
Still she was fairly happy and fairly popular. She had her life, her brothers had theirs.
And then when she was thirteen life took an upheaval. Her mother fell down the stairs and broke her neck. Three days after the funeral their father vanished. As all three of them were minors they were put under Alec’s godfather’s care until their grandfather showed up a few months later.
Then they were spirited away out of the city for the very first time and found their life turned upside down yet again. The Trovens are perhaps the strangest of the First families in that they mainly don’t live in Quarim. Instead they travel the countryside much like gypsies do, in colorful wagons and mini-clans. In fact “Troven” is the equivalent of gypsy on her world. However the Trovens have an ulterior motive for traveling as they do. They’re able to act as news bringers from the city to wizards living elsewhere and judge disputes for those wizards who don’t wish to have the local, usually human, justice deal with their problems. Wizards are snobs.
It was during this time that she began her training as a healer under her grandmother. She enjoyed being able to finally be somewhere else than the city, to be able to see the world. To see a place not surrounded by mountains and maybe even see the ocean. Which she did get to see.
She spent five years traveling and learning how to heal people before being brought back to Quarim. Apparently her grandfather received a message from the Oracle saying that it was highly advised that she and her brothers return there.
Generally speaking, listening to the Oracle was a good idea. So they returned to the city, though she did reluctantly. She liked being out in the world. And that’s when everyone found out about her brother’s abilities. She got to watch as Alec changed from a generally quiet and trying to stay in the background wizard to someone thrust into the forefront of politics and power, becoming the true plaything of the fey king and queen within a matter of months. It was the only way he could avoid being executed or worse having his powers taken away. Laruna tried to help as best she could, but she found herself thrust to the side and at loose ends. She had school to finish but it seemed unimportant. She didn’t have anything to do for herself. This is one of the reasons why she took up making wine, but again everyone looked at her as Alec’s sister or just someone who tagged along. Any identity she could have or tried to make was lost. Friends she had before shunned her out of fear of her brother.
More recently her brother has gotten weird when she learned that his sword - given to him by the king and queen of the fey as a sign of their favor - allowed him to cut into different realities. The sights he’s seen and the stories he’s come back with draw her curiosity and desire to go and see the world. Even better try and go and see some of these different worlds. But what she really wants is a way to break away from her brother’s shadow and become someone herself.
Personality: Laruna likes to do things boldly and loudly. Flirting with anyone that takes her fancy without care of who they might be or drinking and cheerfully starting bar fights. To say she’s extroverted would be like saying water is wet. She wants to try everything and see everything. She’s not exactly bubbly, but perhaps fiery would be a good description for her. Put her in a room with nothing to do and she’d go crazy. Laruna always needs to be doing something.
I would say that she is also highly competitive, when she was little she lorded over the fact that she was older than her brother and that she was the most capable water wizard in her year, even if not the strongest, she was able to quickly learn the tricks and subtleties. It also allowed her to become a vintner of water wine, something that takes incredible skill to do.
Perhaps unlike a lot of girls, she’s not interested in romance or love. Sex is great, flings are awesome, but she doesn’t want to settle down. It just seems like too much trouble. She doesn’t mind dressing up though. In fact she loves it, bangles and earrings and necklaces. Spinning dresses. Though she has enough sense to know when to dress practically.
At times she is uncomfortable with having become a healer. It feels like too much responsibility for her. Taking care of people and holding their lives, at times, in her hands. It doesn’t give her a sense of power but eats her up with worry. Her grandparents felt that she would be a good healer and she thought it would be a good idea, but as she actually started working with people by herself her attitude changed in regards to it. She hasn’t told anyone really, because she’s trying to find the good point in it and doesn’t want to be a problem to the family.
Her brother is enough of a problem. She doesn’t want to be a burden on the family with her own worries and fears. What she’s doing is making plans for when she’s finally an adult - age twenty five - and can make her own way. She wants to be completely independent of the family, not even taking their money so that way they don’t have to worry about her. She wants to start her own winery which should hopefully make her enough income. Sure she’d still have her responsibilities to the family because she is a Troven. But responsibilities are a lot different than requiring their help. Becoming a legal adult can’t come fast enough.
It may seem like a contradiction, what with her flightiness and yet responsiblness but in actuality the flightiness is a mask she wears. A way for her to forget and pretend for a while that she’s someone she’s not and doesn’t have to be. It’s someone she wants to be, but can’t be. She can turn it off reluctantly, if necesssary.
Background setting: [the setting your character came from before PC] Information on her world. Though in her brother’s journal, hence the emphasis on him.
Physical description: [pictures are strongly encouraged & welcome]
Laruna is a young woman about twenty-three with long black hair and mud brown eyes with dusky colored skin. She stands just shy of six feet tall and is nicely proportioned but leaning towards the skinnier side. Her face is narrow and she has sort of prominent cheekbones. This is from her fey ancestry. She has curves but they’re not big ones. Laruna favors wearing bright colors, especially greens, but doesn’t care if they’re dresses, skirts or pants and shirts. She’ll wear anything if it makes her look good. Though she does like flouncy skirts with scarves. Laruna moves very gracefully, like a dancer, again a gift from the fey blood.

“Can’t see my future,” Laruna muttered as she made her way into the shed where she kept the wine vats. The wooden door slammed shut loudly, just like she felt like screaming. The cool air of the room chilled her temper just a little, but she still felt like hitting Jono in the face. She knew it wasn’t his fault that he couldn’t see her future. She was too closely connected to his boyfriend and he too closely connected to Jono. The Oracle couldn’t see his own future.
It still wasn’t fair.
Closing her eyes and inhaling deeply she clutched one of the edges of the vats, sinking her mind into the liquid. The calmness of the song, wine sitting doing nothing in vats, helped ease the violent desires off. Most of them. She’d just been hoping he might have seen a glimpse of something.
Maybe that she’d get out of here.
Alec had just come back from one of those vanishing trips where he’s just not be here for an hour or so and then return. He always looked so odd afterwards and never wanted to talk about it. But she wanted to hear stories. Just something outside of the city, outside of their world. And she knew he went outside their world because that’s what his sword did.
Briefly, as she did on occasion, she thought about stealing his sword and trying to cut her way to somewhere else. But she knew it wouldn’t work for her and he’d only get upset. Besides, she didn’t know how to use swords in general.
Taking another deep breath she peered into the vat. It looked almost ready. Taking a glass she kept on the table she dipped it inside and pulled out some of the water. Critically she listened to the slightly sour notes the water made and looked at the just the slightest shade of purple in the liquid. Just enough to make you wonder if you’d actually seen it or not.
“At least this is something I can do,” she said to the air around her. “Something that may actually get me away from here.” Laruna was getting a tidy and growing amount of money from selling the wine. Money that she kept in her own account and not the family’s. She had plans and plans. But two more years until she was of age.
It really wasn’t fair.
At least, she wasn’t expected to get married. She remembered a conversation with a human girl at one village stop with her grandfather. The girl was turning sixteen in a few weeks and already they were planning her wedding to some boy she barely knew. At least the boy, she’d told Laruna, was nice from what she’d heard and close in age. Oh, sure, she knew she’d eventually have children, but she could have it with whomever she liked.
Taking a sip of the wine she pondered the idea of children and then dismissed it. No, she didn’t want any now. The wine, however tasted just about right. Finishing the glass she held her hand over the vat and shifted some of the harmonics in her mind which transferred to the water. She hummed a little as she did so. She did the same to the other vats.
When she was done she stared out into space for a long moment before saying, “Fire and ashes, I’m going drinking.”
Giving the nearest vat a hard slap, she turned on heel and with a similar slapping of the door on the way out, she left.

So... this isn’t my home is it? It’s some other world, right? Tell me this is right, please. Please.... I really want to be the one who’s somewhere else for once.
